Durbar Square Kathmandu

This palaces are also called Hanuman Dhoka as its name after Monkey God. It lies in the heart of old Kathmandu city at Basantapur. This UNESCO World Heritage Site goes back in history to the 9th Century to the time of King Gunakam Deva. Kathmandu Durbar Square is always a place of attraction to first time visitors with its ensembles of palaces, courtyards and temples which were built during the Malla period. The Durbar Square has been the city's social, religious and political focal point and used to be the Royal Seat till the 19th Century. It is open for visitors and now contains a museum.

Bhaktapur Durbar Square

This Durbar Square is located in the town of Bhaktapur and is also part of the Valley's UNESCO World Heritage. It is only 13 kilometers away from Kathmandu. The whole complex consists of a total of four squares and is one of the main attractions in the Kathmandu Valley.

Around the squares you will find several other attractions such as the Palace of fifty-five Windows, the Golden Gate, the Lion's Gate and various temples, which in part date back to the 15th century.

Just three kilometers west of Kathmandu, atop a hill, lies this religious architecture that is one of the most sacred places for Tibetian Buddhism. This place is also called monkey temple by the western visitors because of the many macaques amusing the people. Seeing the monks and devotees spinning the prayer wheels with the monkeys playing around the stupa is irresistible.

There is a long staircase climbing up the hill on the eastern side of the stupa and there a also shrines and statues of Buddhists and Hindu deities showing the religious harmony. The Stupa itself is the oldest of its kind in Nepal and has numerous shrines and monastries on its premises.
